PENANG, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- The increased price of building materials in the market is expected to push up the price of construction as much as 15 percent next year, says the Chairman of the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia (REHDA) Pulau Pinang, Datuk Jerry Chan Fook Sing.

He said the expected increase in price was based on the continued rise in fuel price as well as other direct price increase in materials.

"Contractors and housing developers are beginning to feel the rise in cost in basic items like steel, cement, tar, steel and transportation cost following the higher fuel price," he told reporters after a briefing here today on "Impact of Infrastructure Development on Real Estate in Penang" at a seminar on Penang's potential under the Northern Corridor Economic Region.

Chan says the developers will have no choice but to raise their cost to avert losses.
