ALOR STAR-- Ten people are claiming losses of between RM5,000 and RM23,250 after they were cheated by an agent of a direct selling syndicate offering umrah and haj tour packages.

The victims only realised the scam when they went to the agent's premises at Jalan Pegawai to claim the bonus prize only to find it vacant.

Consumers Association of Kedah (CAKE) president Datuk Yusoff Ismail said earlier the victims were contacted by an individual representing the agent that they had won umrah and haj packages and a Honda CRV worth about RM200,000.

"The victims who had paid the agent some money had also gone to the Tabung Haji office to check their names but were disappointed. Only then did they realise it was a scam," he said.

Yusoff said based on the complaints, CAKE conducted an investigation and had identified the mastermind behind the scam.

The individual is said to be connected to several direct selling companies which conducted similar scams.

He said the individual's name had been given to the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry for further action.
