KUALA LUMPUR-- The government has agreed to the raising of the ferry fare from Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah to Langkawi, by RM3 and RM5 respectively, beginning Dec 1, the Marine Department announced Wednesday.

The new fare for a one-way trip from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi is RM18, up from the current RM15, and from Kuala Kedah RM23, up from the present RM18.

The department, in a statement issued here, said residents of Langkawi would be eligible for a RM3 discount on the fare, paying only RM15 from Kuala Perlis and RM20 from Kuala Kedah.

The increase in the fare is the second in two years. The last increase was on June 1 2005.

The decision to raise the fare follows a request from the ferry operators in the middle of this year due to increased operation costs.

According to the department, 74 per cent of visitors to the island preferred to take the ferry while the rest flew there.
