SEREMBAN: Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry officers have detected 628 offences in checks on the sale of controlled items since Sept 13. Ministry director of enforcement Mohd Roslan Mahayudin said 201,072 business premises were checked during the period. Of the offences detected, 65 were wholesalers and the rest retailers. We also recorded 58 cases of traders selling goods above the ceiling prices." Roslan said the ministry had deployed its officers at all major markets nationwide to monitor the prices and supply of essential goods in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya. The deployment, which involved some 500 officers, began last week and will continue until after Hari Raya. "We hope the presence of our officers in the markets can prevent traders from profiteering and taking advantage of consumers." He reminded consumers to be careful when buying goods so as not to be cheated by traders. "There have been cases of traders mixing local beef with cheaper imported beef or selling eggs not according to the grades, in order to make extra profit. Consumers need to be careful." Roslan said the ministry had prepared various channels for consumers who feel that they have been cheated to contact the ministry. "They can contact us through our hotline at 1-800-886-800, SMS at 32255 or through the ministry's website."
